Kaleo Legal adds David Sullivan and Alex Gabriel to its Employment and Intellectual Property Practices

Virginia Beach, VA – Kaleo Legal welcomes David Sullivan and Alexandra Gabriel to the firm as members of its Employment and Intellectual Property Groups. David and Alex will both serve as fractional Employment Counsel for clients ranging from small and mid-size companies to large and international corporations. Alex will also take on the roles of Licensing Counsel for software providers, and fractional IP Counsel for various organizations. Both will represent companies as litigation counsel in employment and IP matters in state and federal courts.

David Sullivan specializes in employment law, providing advice and counseling to employers, and representing clients before federal and state courts and administrative agencies. David has extensive experience advising and representing employers in matters arising under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts, the Service Contract Act, other federal and state employment laws, and restrictive covenant agreements. He regularly advises clients on issues such as discipline and discharge, leave and other forms of accommodation, wage and hour compliance, separation and severance agreements, family and medical leave, paid time off, handbooks and employment agreements, and day to day human resource matters. David has particular expertise advising government contractors on employment matters unique to their industry, and advising employers with commission-based sales employees on the employment issues that accompany their business model. He is a member of the Employment Section of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Bar Association. David has been named to Virginia Business Legal Elite and Virginia SuperLawyers.

“Having represented employers in all aspects of labor and employment law for more than twenty years,” said Kaleo Legal Partner Brian Wainger, “David brings serious expertise to our firm’s in-house and litigation practices. He is equally exceptional at both transactional labor and employment matters, and employment litigation, including significant jury trial experience in state and federal courts up and down the east coast. David’s expertise is well respected among the Virginia Bar, and we are excited to have him join us.”

As employment counsel, Alex defends clients facing labor and employment litigation, and she counsels clients with respect to compliance with various federal and state laws and regulations, including Title VII, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family Medical Leave Act and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). As IP counsel, Alex protects and defends her clients’ intellectual property portfolios in litigation involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. She helps companies to maximize the value of their intellectual property portfolios through licensing and commercialization. And she counsels companies throughout the development of policies that protect their trade secrets and other proprietary business information, including confidentiality, non-competition, trade secret, and other agreements to mitigate risks of IP leakage.

Alex has been recognized by Best Lawyers as among the “Ones to Watch” for 2021. Before joining Kaleo Legal, Alex Gabriel practiced both employment and intellectual property law in Virginia Beach, and she previously clerked for The Honorable Glenn R. Croshaw, The Honorable James C. Lewis, and The Honorable Stephen C. Mahan at the Virginia Beach Circuit Court, after graduation from the University of Virginia School of Law.

“With true expertise in both employment and IP law, and in both transactional and litigation matters, Alex is unique in her versatility and her expertise,” said Kaleo Legal partner Will Dickinson. “Alex’s experience with such complimentary practice areas is a perfect fit for a firm like Kaleo Legal, where our attorneys are expected to be counselors, advocates, technicians, and practical business advisors to our clients. We are thrilled to have Alex join the team.”
